Oceania's CEO Frank Del Rio in the New York Times

There's a nice as-told-to article about Frank Del Rio, chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings in the New York Times. He talks about growing up in Cuba, moving to the United States, working for Renaissance Cruises, and launching Oceania Cruises.

He offers several life lessons he's learned, including this:

...there's no substitute for honesty. If you're honest during good times and bad, people may disagree with you, but they'll always trust you. I'd rather have someone's trust than just about anything else.
—Frank Del Rio

The Best of 2011: A Luxury Cruise for Each Month of Next Year

With 2011 just a month away, many of us are reviewing our upcoming cruise plans for next year. If I could wrangle an unlimited amount of vacation time—or could figure out how to bring our two Bearded Collies with us on these adventures!—the 12 cruises I'd take are listed below.

They range from island strongholds like the Maldives, Hawaii, Galapagos, and French Polynesia to Southeast Asia, the Mediterranean, Norway, South Africa, and Alaska.

Which are your must-cruise itineraries for 2011?

12 Fantastic Luxury Cruises for 2011

JANUARY 29, 2011
Paul Gauguin Cruises (m/s Paul Gauguin)
11-Night Cook Islands & Society Islands
Day 1 Papeete, Tahiti
Day 2 Huahine
Day 3 at sea
Day 4 Aitutaki, Cook Islands
Day 5 Rarotonga, Cook Islands
Day 6 at sea
Day 7 Bora Bora
Day 8 Bora Bora
Day 9 Taha'a (Motu Mahana)
Day 10 Moorea
Day 11 Moorea / Papeete, Tahiti
Day 12 Papeete, Tahiti

Why this cruise? We sailed with Paul Gauguin Cruises last May and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. French Polynesia is one of the most beautiful places on earth and Paul Gauguin Cruises has the expertise to show you the hidden gems. We sailed a seven-night itinerary last time around and it wasn't long enough. Next time, I'll go for the eleven-night Cook and Society Islands combo cruise.

FEBRUARY 7, 2011
Four Seasons (Four Seasons Explorer)
7-Night Maldivian Circuit Cruise
This cruise begins on North Male Atoll, Maldives at the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and sails to Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru on Baa Atoll.

Why this cruise? The Maldives, gorgeous coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, are on my bucket list. The Four Seasons has two exquisite properties in the archipelago as well as a luxury yacht, the Four Seasons Explorer.

MARCH 2, 2011
Silversea (Silver Wind)
10-Night Cape Town, South Africa Round-Trip
Day 1 Cape Town, South Africa
Day 2 at sea
Day 3 East London, South Africa
Day 4 at sea
Day 5 Maputo, Mozambique
Day 6 Richards Bay, South Africa
Day 7 Richards Bay, South Africa
Day 8 Durban, South Africa
Day 9 Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Day 10 Mossel Bay, South Africa
Day 11 Cape Town, South Africa

Why this cruise? We love the crew aboard Silversea ships. The butlers, stewards, bartenders, and waitstaff always strike the right balance of attentive yet friendly service. Likewise, the passenger mix makes it easy to find like-minded dinner companions. Finally, this is a fantastic itinerary for anyone who loves South Africa. These are fantastic ports with no shortage of excellent shore excursions on offer.

APRIL 30, 2011
Cunard (Queen Elizabeth)
5-Night Getaway Voyage
Day 1 Southampton, UK
Day 2 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Day 3 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Day 4 Zeebrugge, Belgium
Day 5 Le Havre, France
Day 6 Southampton, UK

Why this cruise? This is Cunard's newest ocean liner and, to be honest, we've never sailed with this line. It may turn out to be too formal for our liking, but I think every cruise fanatic should sail with Cunard at least once. This five-night itinerary hits some fun ports like Amsterdam, Netherlands and Zeebrugge, Belgium.

MAY 9, 2011
Crystal Cruises (Crystal Symphony)
12-Night Northern Lights
Day 1 San Francisco
Day 2 at sea
Day 3 Victoria, British Columbia
Day 4 Victoria, British Columbia
Day 5 at sea
Day 6 Sitka, Alaska
Day 7 Juneau, Alaska
Day 8 Skagway, Alaska
Day 9 at sea
Day 10 Ketchikan, Alaska
Day 11 at sea
Day 12 at sea
Day 13 San Francisco

Why this cruise? Alaska is one of our favorite cruise destinations and it's nice to see these ports without sacrificing luxury. Crystal Cruises offers up some of the best dining at sea and that's another thing that makes this itinerary so appealing.

JUNE 18, 2011
Azamara Club Cruises (Azamara Journey)
7-Night Spain and Portugal Cruise
Day 1 Barcelona, Spain
Day 2 Ibiza, Spain
Day 3 Ibiza, Spain
Day 4 Granada (Motril), Spain
Day 5 Gibraltar, UK
Day 6 Seville (Cadiz), Spain
Day 7 Lisbon, Portugal
Day 8 Lisbon, Portugal

Why this cruise? Plain and simple: it's the chance to sail the Strait of Gibraltar.

JULY 29, 2011
Oceania Cruises (Marina)
12-Night Treasures of the Continent
Day 1 London (Dover), UK
Day 2 Amsterdam, Netherlands
Day 3 Bruges (Zeebrugge), Belgium
Day 4 Paris (Honfleur), France
Day 5 St. Peter Ports (Guernsey), UK
Day 6 Saint-Malo, France
Day 7 Pont-Aven (Concarneau), France
Day 8 Bordeaux (Le Verdon), France
Day 9 Bordeaux (Le Verdon), France
Day 10 Biarritz (Saint-Jean-de-Luz), France
Day 11 Santander, Spain
Day 12 at sea
Day 13 London (Dover), UK

Why this cruise? Oceania Marina makes its debut in January 2011 and the ship will still have that new ship feel for this summertime cruise. The itinerary is spectacular with stops in Saint-Mao and Bordeaux, France.

AUGUST 14, 2011
Yachts of Seabourn (Seabourn Sojourn)
9-Night Norwegian Fjords
Day 1 Copenhagen, Denmark
Day 2 at sea
Day 3 Flaam, Norway
Day 4 Aalesund, Norway
Day 5 Olden, Norway
Day 6 Bergen, Norway
Day 7 Stavanger, Norway
Day 8 Oslo, Norway
Day 9 at sea
Day 10 Copenhagen, Denmark

Why this cruise? You've got a trifecta with this one: a terrific Norwegian itinerary, the beautiful Seabourn Sojourn mega-yacht, and an end-of-the-summer embarkation date.

SEPTEMBER 24, 2011
SeaDream Yacht Club (SeaDream II)
7-Night Venice, Italy to Dubrovnik, Croatia
Day 1 Venice, Italy
Day 2 Rab, Croatia
Day 3 Split and Hvar, Croatia
Day 4 Hvar, Croatia
Day 5 Korcula, Croatia
Day 6 Kotor, Montenegro
Day 7 Dubrovnik, Croatia
Day 8 Dubrovnik, Croatia

Why this cruise? SeaDream is one of our favorite cruise lines (best gourmet cuisine at sea and super-friendly crew) and we've been wanting to get back to Croatia since we visited Hvar last summer.

OCTOBER 10, 2011
Orion Expeditions (Orion II)
7-Night Gulf of Siam Explorer
Day 1 Singapore
Day 2 Tioman Island, Malaysia
Day 3 Kuala Terrangganu, Malaysia
Day 4 At sea
Day 5 Ko Samui, Thailand
Day 6 Ang Thong Marine Park, Thailand
Day 7 Ko Kut, Thailand
Day 8 Bangkok

Why this cruise? Orion II is new to the line's fleet and recently underwent a major refurbishment. This expedition line combines attentive service with offbeat ports of call. We love Southeast Asia and I can't imagine more compelling destinations than those in Malaysia and Thailand that are visited during Orion's "Gulf of Siam Explorer" cruise.

NOVEMBER 14, 2011
American Safari Cruises (Safari Explorer)
7-Night Hawaiian Seascapes
Day 1 Lahaina, Maui
Day 2 Molokai
Day 3 Molokai
Day 4 Lanai
Day 5 Molokini
Day 6 Ka Lae, Big Island
Day 7 Kailua-Kona, Big Island
Day 8 Kona, Big Island

Why this cruise? American Safari Cruises is an American company with an all-American crew. This small business has always impressed us and I'd sail anywhere with this outfit.

DECEMBER 2, 2011
Lindblad Expeditions (National Geographic Endeavour)
10-Night Galapagos Islands
Day 1 Guayaquil, Ecuador
Day 2 Guayaquil / Galapagos / Baltra
Day 3 Floreana
Day 4 Isabela / Fernandina
Day 5 Santa Cruz
Day 6 Santa Cruz
Day 7 Bartolome / Santiago
Day 8 Espanola
Day 9 Baltra / Guayaquil
Day 10 Guayaquil

Why this cruise? Are you on Lindblad's mailing list? If not, get on it. The cruise catalogs are packed with photos of up-close and personal animal encounters in the Galapagos. I listened in on a recent Lindblad webinar and I hope we can make time for a trip to the Galapagos Islands soon.

My Wish List: Top 10 Rock Concerts on Luxury Cruise Ships

I admit that I've got a few obsessions in life... two of which are rock concerts and cruise vacations. In my younger days I worked for Musician magazine and spent more time at concerts than in the office. These days I'm more selective about the shows I see, but still love being in the middle of the crush as a band plays to fans who know every word of every song on the set list.

On the cruise front, I love trying new ships and have a checklist that keeps track of which ships and ports of call I still need to visit. It's little wonder then that I was daydreaming earlier today and came up with a wish list of rock concert that would be amazing if they were staged aboard luxury cruise ships.

My Wish List: Top 10 Rock Concerts on Luxury Cruise Ships
  1. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers aboard Paul Gauguin Cruises' m/s Paul Gauguin in French Polynesia

  2. U2 aboard the Yachts of Seabourn's Seabourn Sojourn in the Norwegian Fjords

  3. Jackson Browne aboard Silversea's Silver Spirit in the Mediterranean

  4. Martin Sexton aboard American Safari Cruises' Safari Explorer in Hawaii

  5. Daniel Lanois aboard Windstar Cruises' Wind Star in Costa Rica

  6. Brian Setzer Orchestra aboard Cunard's Queen Elizabeth for a transatlantic crossing

  7. John Mayer aboard Oceania Cruises' Marina in the Caribbean

  8. Jimmy Buffett aboard SeaDream Yacht Club's SeaDream II in the Caribbean

  9. James Taylor aboard Regent Seven Seas' Voyager in New Zealand and Australia

  10. Nora Jones aboard Crystal Cruises' Crystal Symphony in New England and Canada

Note: THIS IS JUST A DREAM LIST; these concerts (sadly) will never happen. It's just something fun to think about. Which bands would be on your cruise wish list?

A Million Ways to Slice a Cruise Fare

Tracking cruise fare pricing is getting a bit comical these days. Every single line has its own promotion offering meaty discounts off the "brochure" fare or free shore excursions or thousands of dollars worth of onboard credits or "free" air or some other perceived perk.

Luxury cruise lines have made a point to announce to the media that they've all enjoyed strong bookings in recent days. As such, some lines like Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, and Silversea are all planning on raising fares in the coming months.

Yet other lines, like SeaDream and Crystal Cruises have released lower fares for select cruises in 2009 and 2010.

So what gives? Is the economy strengthening or are people just getting sick and tired of putting off their vacations? Maybe it's a little bit of both.

The fact of the matter is this: it's nearly impossible to compare some of these cruise deals in an apples to apples fashion. So don't. Select your favorite cruise line or your desired destination or pick a date that you're free to sail and then review your options and pricing.

2009 was the year to get the lowest rate ever for a luxury cruise. In 2010, let's concentrate on committing to the best vacation option for us as individuals. Each cruise line shines in its own special way and we all gravitate to one over another for very personal reasons. For me, I'd happily embark on any cruise ship tomorrow in search of an adventure! Who wants to join me?!

SeaDream Caribbean Deals: October 2009 through January 2010

A friend of mine called from Denver today to tell me that it was snowing. Yes! Snowing on September 21st! She considers this cold white stuff an omen for a long, bad winter and she wanted my advice on which Caribbean cruise to book. SeaDream Yacht Club came to mind immediately.

SeaDream is offering some terrific deals on Caribbean sailings between October 2009 and January 2010. Here's a sample of the itineraries:

SeaDream I Voyages
  • October 27, 2009: Lisbon to San Juan (11 days) $2,499 gty. (originally $4,900)

  • December 13, 2009: San Juan to San Juan (7 days) $2,799 gty. (originally $6,400)

  • January 3, 2010: San Juan to San Juan (5 days) $2,599 (originally $5,400)

  • January 8, 2010: San Juan to St. Thomas (9 days) $3,599 gty. (originally $7,400)

  • January 17, 2010: St. Thomas to San Juan (5 days) $1,999 gty. (originally $5,400)

  • January 22, 2010: San Juan to Barbados (7 days) $3,299 gty. (originally $6,400)
SeaDream II Voyages
  • October 10, 2009: Seville to San Juan (11 days) $2,499 gty. (originally $4,900)

  • October 25, 2009: San Juan to St. Thomas (7 days) $2,199 gty. (originally $6,400)

  • November 29, 2009: St. Maarten to San Juan (5 days) $2,199 gty. (originally $5,400)

  • December 4, 2009: San Juan to St. Thomas (9 days) $3,499 (originally $7,400)

  • December 13, 2009: St. Thomas to San Juan (5 days) $1,799 gty. (originally $5,400)

  • December 18, 2009: San Juan to San Juan (9 days) $4,899 (originally $8,400)

  • January 3, 2010: San Juan to San Juan (7 days) $3,599 gty. (originally $6,400)

  • January 10, 2010: San Juan to St. Thomas (7 days) $3,399 gty. (originally $6,400)

  • January 17, 2010: St. Thomas to San Juan (7 days) $3,399 gty. (originally $6,400)

  • January 24, 2010: San Juan to St. Thomas (7 days)$3,399 gty. (originally $6,400)

These are excellent fares and considering that many luxury lines like Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Oceania Cruises, and Silversea have all recently announced price increases, this may be your last opportunity to snag deep discounts on a high-end cruise line.

Luxury Cruise Bargains Hit the Sweet Spot

There was once a time when travelers who wished to book a cruise at the lowest possible price waited until January for the start of Wave Season. That's traditionally when cruise lines lure passengers with inexpensive fares, complimentary airfare, or hundreds of dollars of onboard credit to blow on shore excursions, vintage wines, spa treatments, and the like.

But that was BTR (before the recession). These days cruise lines—even the ultra-luxe that offer true all-inclusive experiences—are offering Wave Season-like bargains right now and, frankly, at fares that are unlikely to be repeated once the economy bounces skyward.

In fact, this may be the best time to book a cruise aboard one of the luxury lines. However, executives from Carnival, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania Cruises, Seabourn, and other cruise lines have publicly cautioned recently that the window to snag the cruise deal of the decade may close soon. In fact, both Regent Seven Seas and Silversea are planning to raise prices in October and Oceania will raise prices in January 2010.

2009 and 2010 Sweet Spot Deals

If the month of December is your getaway horizon, look to Seabourn's 208-passenger yacht, Spirit. Five-nights in the Caribbean will set you back just $1,349 per person (regularly $3,760 pp).

Another solid high-end cruise option isn't a cruise ship at all: it's SeaDream Yacht Club's 110-person yacht, SeaDream II. Book a five-night St. Thomas to San Juan sailing for $1,799 per person (that's 67% off the brochure rate).

For those that prefer sailing under wind power, check out Windstar Cruises' three motor-sail-yachts: Wind Spirit, Wind Star, and Wind Surf. The December 12th seven-night roundtrip excursion aboard Wind Star, out of Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica, is running at $899 per person.

Crystal Cruises, a line that's not usually known for steep discounts, is offering better than two-for-one deals for the rest of the year. No plans for Thanksgiving? Book a seven-night Caribbean roundtrip out of Miami for $2,480 per person (a 55% discount) and receive $500 in onboard credit.

Looking ahead to summer 2010, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is making it easy for you to take the kids or grandkids on their first luxury voyage with a special per child rate of $399 on 11 Alaskan itineraries aboard Navigator. (Similar deals are available for Caribbean, European, and Baltics sailings.)

Not to be outdone, Silversea has announced across the board savings in 2010 with 60% off published fares and free air on more than 150 itineraries. One good deal is Silver Wind's April 19, 2010, 10-night roundtrip out of Venice, which is available for approximately $3,800 per person (brochure rate is $9,795). Book by December 31.

If French Polynesia is on your radar for 2010, this early booking deal—valid until September 30—from Paul Gauguin Cruises is compelling: 50% cruise fare savings plus free roundtrip air from Los Angeles to Tahiti on select cruises of 10 nights or longer aboard m/s Paul Gauguin.

Is the Mediterranean or Scandinavia is on your "must visit" list? Oceania Cruises comes to the table with a $2,000 price reduction off two-for-one fares with free air. Rates are available on select cruises from April through December 2010. For $3,742 per person, you can book a 10-night Mediterranean cruise out of Monte Carlo.

Booking a Luxury Cruise

Your best bet is to book your passage with a travel agent that specializes in high-end cruises. Many lines often offer preferred pricing to the customers of these agents. Consider Brown & Keene Travel, Elite Travel International, and Cruise Holidays of Mission Viejo. Alternatively, book with a reputable online agency such as VacationstoGo.com. True bargain hunters will enjoy comparing prices from several agencies at CruiseCompete.com.

Five Things I'd Change About Luxury Cruising

During cocktail parties you'll often find me espousing the benefits of luxury cruise vacations to anyone who'll listen. I'm a die-hard fan who loves falling asleep in one port and waking up in another. But, as with all things, there's always room for improvement. Herein is my manifesto for what I'd change if I suddenly found myself the CEO of a luxury cruise line.

Five Things I'd Change About Luxury Cruising
  1. Could we have some more 7-night itineraries, please? I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd love to see more 7-night itineraries from some luxury cruise lines. We'd love to sail with Oceania Cruises, but most voyages are 10- to 14-nights in duration. In our early forties, we're in the midst of our careers and being out of the office for two weeks or more just isn't possible most of the time. This change would go a long way in attracting the young, affluent consumer. SeaDream Yacht Club actually offers several five-night voyages and they seem to be consistently booked solid.

  2. Increase the chocolate quotient. There's never enough chocolate available aboard luxury cruise ships. Seriously. I grew up in the age of The Love Boat television series and everything I heard about cruising included a description of the decadent dessert buffets and chocolate morsels to be had at every turn. I honestly haven't found that. In fact, some luxury ships stock fairly downmarket chocolates, such as those made by Godiva. While that name might have meant something in terms of quality long ago, it certainly doesn't now. I can buy Godiva at K-mart, for goodness sake! If it were up to me, cruise lines would stock higher quality chocolates from purveyors around the world. I will admit, however, that during a Caribbean cruise aboard Windstar's Wind Surf, the pastry chef took excellent care of me and my sweet tooth wanted for nothing!

  3. No pink slips for the ship's photographer, please! I know many of you hate these contrived photo opportunities, but I'm sad that several luxury cruise lines have actually nixed their photography departments. As a photographer himself, my husband is behind the camera more often than not and some of the only pictures of us together have been taken by cruise line photographers. During our Grand Asia voyage with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, the ship's photographer took some great candids of us on deck with the volcanos of Kamchatka in the background.

  4. It's 2009. Why is the Internet so slow on cruise ships? I used to give cruise lines a lot of slack on this one. After all, imagine the technical difficulties of wiring a ship for wifi access or upgrading communications packages for super-fast Internet connections. However, there are a lot of new ships coming online and many others being completely refurbished. Upgrading Internet communication should be a priority.

  5. Let's give those single cruisers a break! I've been seeing a lot more special offers that rescind or lower the single supplement cruise fare. That's wonderful and I hope to see even more of it. If a particular voyage is selling slowly, offer a break on the supplement. Single cruisers will be grateful and will book more cruises.

Those are the five things I'd definitely change about the luxury cruise industry. What about you? What aspect of cruising do you think could be improved? Let us know!

Redesigned Website from Oceania Cruises

If you haven't visited Oceania Cruises's website lately, it's worth the click of a mouse to go see it now. The cruise line has revamped its site and it's vastly improved!

You can still search for cruises based on date or destination but now there is also a trio of pull-down menus that let you quickly select destination, travel month, and desired ship directly from the homepage...a much quicker way to find for what you're looking for.

The "Explore Ships" section has also been enhanced and includes information on the Marina, Oceania's next luxury cruise ship that's currently being built.

And there's a valuable page about how their air inclusive program works.

Lots of good Oceania Cruises info is now at your fingertips. Great job on the website redesign!

Oceania Cruises: New 2010 European Itineraries Plus Unlimited Soda and Water

The 2010 European season from Oceania Cruises went on sale yesterday. Of special note is the fact that the cruise fare will now include unlimited bottled water and soft drinks. (You'll still need to sign a chit for any alcoholic beverages you order.) This semi-inclusive setup begins with the April 4, 2010 Pearls of the Riviera cruise aboard the Regatta. (Cruises scheduled before this date do not include the free soda and water.)

There are 34 itineraries to select from on the Regatta, Insignia, and Nautica. Oceania has added 30 new ports of call and almost three quarters of the routes are new for the line. Per person rates, with free airfare and a $2,000 price reduction off 2 for 1 cruise fares, start at $2,699. —Andrea M. Rotondo

Which Cruise Promos Pique Your Interest?

Some of you have probably noticed that I've added a poll feature to the Luxury Cruise Bible blog. You'll find this week's question—What type of cruise fare specials do you prefer?—at the upper right side of the blog's homepage.

Your choices, and you can select more than one, include:
  • 2-for-1 pricing
  • free economy airfare
  • low-cost biz airfare add-on
  • cabin category upgrade
  • shipboard credit
  • free shore excursions
  • pre-/post-cruise hotel stay
I'm posing this question because I'm curious which cruise line promotions catch your interest and which don't. I'll admit that 2-for-1 ads usually make me look twice, but I sometimes think that the per person rack rate is so inflated that the special may not be much of a bargain. Of course, recently there have been some amazing 2-for-1 deals, especially from Oceania Cruises.

Free economy air doesn't do a thing for me, probably because I'm a frequent flyer airmiles junkie. I can usually either find a great deal on airfare on my own or book an award ticket using the miles I've amassed on several airlines.

Low-cost biz airfare add-ons are attractive, however. If it's a long-haul flight, I try to figure out a cost-effective way to book business- or first-class airline tickets. Some add-on specials are definitely worth taking advantage of.

Cabin category upgrades are only enticing to me on certain types of sailings. If there are a lot of sea days or the scenery is especially gorgeous—French Polynesia, Caribbean, some of the Mediterranean ports—then I'd be more interested in a better category stateroom with a veranda. Otherwise, we spend most of our time outside of our cabin so we're fine with just about any category.

Shipboard credits can be useful if you're using them to pay a bar tab, visit the spa, or book shore excursions. But so many luxury cruise lines are all-inclusive, that it can be tough to spend the onboard credit in some cases.

I believe that Regent Seven Seas Cruises is one of the few luxury cruise lines offering free shore excursions. (Of course, this isn't a new concept. Small ship cruising has been packaging complimentary shore excursions for years, a la American Safari Cruises, Lindblad Expeditions, and others.)

While I haven't seen this offer that frequently, complimentary pre- and post-cruise hotel stays can make certain cruise fares very attractive.

So which pricing specials catch your interest? Vote in our poll today.

Oceania Celebrates as Marina's Keel is Layed

Frank Del Rio, chairman & CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings (left) and Bob Binder, president of Oceania Cruises. (Photo courtesy of Oceania Cruises.)

Oceania Cruises' management and development teams had a lot to celebrate on March 7, when a keel laying ceremony for Marina was held at the Sestri Ponente shipyard near Genoa, Italy. This ship, being built by Fincantieri, is Oceania's first purpose-built vessel and it will accommodate 1,252 passengers and 780 crew members. Marina will be the first Oceania-class vessel to sail the seven seas and incorporates the best aspects of the Regatta-class ships—Insignia, Nautica, and Regatta—while increasing cruising speed by 20 percent.

Oceania fans are especially looking forward to cruising aboard the Marina with her six open-seating restaurants and spacious suites, 96 percent of which feature teak verandas.

"This is a momentous day in the history of Oceania Cruises, one which only be eclipsed on the day we take delivery of Marina in 2010," said Frank Del Rio, chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings and founder of Oceania Cruises. "We want to express our sincere thanks to our loyal guests, travel partners, and the entire Oceania Cruises team for all their dedication and hard work in making this new ship become a reality."

Members of Fincantieri and Oceania's management teams were on hand for the keel laying ceremony. As you know, during this ceremony coins are often welded into the keel for good luck. The coins selected for Marina included a U.S. silver dollar and a pre-Castro silver Cuban peso.

7 New Luxury Cruise Ships on the Horizon

If you're like me, you've had just about enough of media reports pointing to cut-backs in consumer spending in the travel category. Some pundits are forecasting less-than-rosy scenarios for the next 18–24 months. And while I agree that the economy is in very serious straits, I don't want to lose sight of the wonderful things that are happening right now in the luxury cruise category.

Think about it: we've got some gorgeous new luxury ships coming down the pike:
  • Seabourn's 450-guest Odyssey—sailing June 2009

  • Silversea's 540-guest Silver Spirit—sailing January 2010

  • Seabourn's 450-guest Sojourn—sailing June 2010

  • Oceania's 1,260-passenger Marina—sailing September 2010

  • Cunard's 2,092-guest Queen Elizabeth (to replace the QE2)—sailing Fall 2010

  • Seabourn's 450-guest unnamed ship—sailing 2011

  • Oceania's 1,260-guest unnamed ship—sailing July 2011
These new ship launches will ultimately be good for the luxury cruise lines and for you and me as consumers.

Will there be too many staterooms to fill in the coming years? Perhaps in the short term, but that may cause increased competition for the cruise lines to either provide impeccable service or offer lower price points.

Will all of the cruise lines make it through the recession? I certainly hope so, but if they don't there will be consolidation and an opportunity for combined teams to come together with new ideas to meet the challenges of the future.

We're already seeing some innovative strategies to entice new bookings (i.e., Regent's free shore excursion offer and Paul Gauguin Cruises' loyalty program that offers discounts to travelers who've sailed with a select group of cruise lines in the past).

These are all good things for the luxury cruise market. I'm looking forward to seeing all of these new ships take to the seas in the next few years.

It's Official: Apollo Acquires Regent

This has been brewing for weeks, but it's finally official: Apollo Management has acquired Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Here's the press release that was issued this morning:

Apollo Management L.P. Acquires Regent Seven Seas

Minneapolis-based Carlson and Apollo Management L.P. (Apollo) today announced that Apollo has agreed to acquire Carlson's Regent Seven Seas Cruises operations. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2008, subject to normal conditions for a transaction of this type, including regulatory approval. The cruise operations will continue as a key part of the global Regent brand.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises will be placed under the ownership of Prestige Cruise Holdings, Inc. (PCH), a corporation controlled by Apollo which will manage certain cruise portfolio assets of Apollo. NCL Corporation will remain a separate holding outside of PCH.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will remain a wholly independent brand under the guidance of Mark Conroy, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and will continue to operate from its Fort Lauderdale, Florida headquarters, and Oceania Cruises will remain in its Miami headquarters, headed by Bob Binder, president of Oceania Cruises. Both Binder and Conroy will report directly to Frank Del Rio, chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings.

The transaction is part of a unified strategy undertaken by Apollo and Carlson to expand their respective core cruise and hotel operations, and become the world's preeminent operators of luxury hotels, resorts and cruises. Carlson will retain ownership of the master Regent brand, along with the worldwide operations of Regent Hotels & Resorts.

"Through this proposed investment, Apollo has demonstrated its deep commitment to the Regent brand and the continuing growth of the Regent cruise line fleet," said Carlson Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Marilyn Carlson Nelson. "As owners of the Regent brand, we remain committed to expanding its scope and success both on land and at sea. We are confident the Regent cruise brand will continue to develop along with and lead the industry segment, which has expanded dramatically since 1992, when we launched our first ship. The potential for continued expansion of the luxury Regent hotel brand, and our entire hotel portfolio, is enormous."

Apollo's acquisition of Regent Seven Seas Cruises strengthens its position in the cruise industry with the addition of an award-winning luxury cruise brand to its cruise portfolio. Regent Seven Seas Cruises will continue to focus on the luxury segment of the marketplace by offering a six-star, all-inclusive experience, and Oceania Cruises will continue to lead the Upper Premium segment.

"Everyone at Regent Seven Seas Cruises is delighted with the formation of this new family of companies. With the tremendous financial resources of Apollo available to us, Regent Seven Seas Cruises will continue to strengthen our position as the leading luxury cruise brand. Our valued guests and travel agent partners will experience a seamless transition as we continue to deliver world-class cruise vacation experiences. We look forward to continued success and the use of the new financial resources available to accelerate our future growth," stated Mark Conroy, president of Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

"Regent Seven Seas is the largest, most successful luxury cruise brand, and we look forward to the growth opportunities this addition offers consumers, travel agents and the team members at both Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises," stated Steve Martinez, a partner with Apollo.

Six times chosen as the world's top-rated cruise line by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazine, Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers voyages to all corners of the globe aboard its fleet of modern, six-star rated, luxury vessels. In addition to the all-suite, all-balcony, 700-guest Seven Seas Voyager and all-suite, all-balcony, 700-guest Seven Seas Mariner, the fleet also includes the 490-guest Seven Seas Navigator, with 90 percent balcony suites, and the 330-guest Paul Gauguin, a ship dedicated to sailing the South Pacific.

"Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers an exceptional product, and its superb shipboard and shoreside teams have built an enviable reputation as the foremost luxury cruise brand. The brand awareness and market presence of Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises will offer our discerning travelers and travel agents worldwide the most vibrant and diverse range of cruise experiences, serving the broadest spectrum of spectacular destinations," stated Frank Del Rio, chairman and CEO of Prestige Cruise Holdings.

Lehman Brothers Inc. served as financial advisor to Prestige Cruise Holdings on the transaction, and Goldman, Sachs & Co. served as financial advisor to Carlson.

Carlson announced today that it has named Bjorn Gullaksen as president, Regent Luxury Group. Gullaksen has most recently served as executive vice president for Carlson Hotels Worldwide Managed Hotels & Resorts in the Americas. He will continue to oversee the managed hotel and resort operations in his new role. A hospitality industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience, he previously has served as the company's executive vice president of Full Service Hotels, including Radisson Hotels & Resorts and Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts.

Under Gullaksen, a brand council, with leadership from the cruise company and Carlson Hotels Worldwide, will oversee the luxury standards of the Regent brand in all of its applications globally.

Jay Witzel, president and CEO of Carlson Hotels Worldwide and CEO of Regent, said Regent Hotels & Resorts will continue to grow globally as a leading luxury brand in the hotel industry. Following the completion of the cruise line transaction, Regent Hotels & Resorts will be operated as part of Carlson Hotels Worldwide, one of the world's top 10 hotel companies. The current global portfolio includes Regent properties in Beijing; Shanghai; Singapore; Taipei; Berlin; Zagreb, Croatia; and Turks and Caicos. The company's North American expansion plans also include The Regent Bal Harbour, Florida, scheduled to open in early 2008 and The Regent Boston at Battery Wharf, also scheduled to open in 2008. Future global developments include properties in Bordeaux, France; Bangkok, Thailand; The Republic of Maldives; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Papagayo, Costa Rica; and Dubrovnik, Croatia.
